    MEP BIM Modeling

MEP Modeling, Coordination & Digital Fabrication

ENG is one of the local leading VDC services providers for Trade Contractors. We started our business delivering services on MEP BIM Modeling, Trade Spatial Coordination and BIM for Prefabrication.

Advanced BIM Coordination and Clash Detection Solutions

Our teams of Engineers and Field Detailers have a long standing experience and expertise in all trades: Mechanical [Sheet Metal & Piping], Plumbing, Electrical and Fire Protection. We count with solid experience modeling LOD 350 and fabricable LOD 400 models.

We represent a Trade or Lead the Weekly BIM coordination meetings, where we work with the other trades solving clashes between the MEP’s, architectural and Structural as well as constructability issues (including clearances for installation and maintenance).

We leverage Autodesk REVIT utilizing Fab-parts as well as Sysque®, we also use Autodesk Fabrication CADMEP, Trimble PD3D and DD3D, and Bentley AECOSim.

We are proud of the fabrication database that we have created over the past 16 years. However, on several occasions we utilize our client specific database.

    Specialized Services in Digital Fabrication

Preparing a building component or assembly for fabrication is a time-consuming process that depends on numerous complex factors. BIM facilitates a variety of related design/construction activities, including digital fabrication and Shop drawings of building components. BIM enables digital design-to-fabrication workflows for all building disciplines.

As outputs for field installation we produce Install & Shop Drawings, as well as setting up Points in the models for layout with Robotic Stations.

For Pre-Fabrication at the Shop, we produce accurate Spool Drawings, MAJs for CNC, and direct outputs for automatic pipe cutting machines such as Tigerstop™

We either take the full scope and ownership of Model-Coordination process on behalf of one or more of the Trade Contractors, or we act as an extension of the Contractors in-house team to enhance its capacity during pics of work. On several occasions, Architectural or Structural Models are missing. ENG can provide you with the solutions you need. Our Architectural and Structural teams can model efficiently for BIM coordination purpose.

How we deliver our BIM Services – Off or On-Site

All our services can be performed at our own office, communicating via web-based collaboration tools, video calls and traditional phone calls.

However, we also believe that for certain endeavors a personal presence is required in order to increase communication, thereby maximizing efficiency. ENG designed a unique On-Site support business model, where we can provide on-site support by sending our BIM professionals to work at your office or in the field for a period of time (from a few weeks, months or even years at larger projects); while the rest of the team at ENG supports you from our offices.

We also offer different types of contracts to suit your needs, such as Time and Material, Lump Sum and Full-time engagements. Please contact us to discuss your next BIM project.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

    What is MEP modeling?

It means to create 3D virtual (BIM) Building Information Models that represent the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing components of a facility.

    Is AutoCAD MEP BIM?

Not in its full meaning but it can be to some extent. Especially when it comes to fulfilling a “BIM Spatial Coordination” requirement where you must deliver a 3D model of your specific trade/discipline for clash detection and resolution purposes only. In this case, if you can deliver an accurate geometry, you may get away without having to deliver a true parametric BIM model. Fabrication CADmep, however, has been industry standard for more than 15 years.

    What is structural BIM?

It’s a 3-Dimensional Intelligent virtual model that represents the structural components of a building such as foundations, columns, beams, etc.

    What is BIM Coordination?

It is the collaborative process of spatially coordinating all different disciplines that go into a construction project by combining each of their 3D models into one federated model. Then running a clash report with software like Navisworks or BIM360 Glue, filtering, discussing, and solving the most relevant clashes in periodic meetings with all stakeholders until reaching a consensus of ready to sign off-model, and ready for construction.

What are the benefits of using Revit MEP?

Autodesk Revit is probably the most widely used BIM authoring software platform in the market. It may not necessarily be the best, but it’s the one that has more real manufacturers content available and also where you may find more potential qualified users in the market to perform the work. Revit is much more powerful as a collaborative tool, and the amount and quality of information that can be embedded in the model, compared to AutoCAD, is immensely higher.

What is the difference between AutoCAD MEP and Revit MEP?

AutoCAD MEP is a non-collaborative CAD-based software, suitable for systems design, but limited when it comes to modeling for fabrication or a BIM coordination process. Revit MEP is the current industry standard for BIM coordination, along with Fabrication CADmep, but it can produce a more intelligent model and with much higher collaboration capabilities. Revit is a full BIM software; AutoCAD MEP is limited.

    What is structural MEP?

There is no such thing. Structural modeling is one thing that refers to the design and development of the structure of a building, and MEP modeling is the design and development of Mechanical, Electrical, and Piping systems.
