    What is a Hackathon?
The word hackathon is a combination of the words “hack” and “marathon” where hack stands for experimental, creative problem solving with a playful approach and marathon stands for the duration of the event. The hackathon has its origin in software and hardware engineering, but the concept is now also successfully applied in other industries for developing innovative solutions.

    How does it work?
The event kicks off with an opening presentation where the event agenda is laid out. After that, participants suggest ideas and form teams, based on individual interests and skills. If you have an idea, this is where you get a chance to pitch it to the other participants and gather your dream team! Afterward, it is time to start hacking! Over four days, teams compete against each other while trying to find solutions for the challenge chosen. In the final part of the event, the teams will present their projects to a panel of judges that will select the winners!

What is the theme of this Hackathon?
Teams should use BIM technology as the basis for the project. They will be able to explore any aspect of the construction process. Feel empowered to get creative!

    Who should attend?

    • AEC Professionals: This includes VDC/BIM Managers, Facilities Managers, GIS Specialists, Public Utilities, Policy Makers, and everyone that deals with the built environment. Come with your industry experience and the problems you want to solve.
    • Tech Developers: We need BIM nerds, makers, game programmers, and rebels that code. Come to hack with new hardware and tech all in the name of doing something crazy and fantastic–and helpful.
    • UI/UX Designers: We need people like you to make everything look beautiful, work intuitively, and create a stellar user experience. Great applications require great design.

How do I form or join a team?
Groups are formed based on the interest and affinity of the ideas expressed by the participants. Ideally, teams should be created before the event, so everybody can get to know each other better. Also, we believe this is the best way to enhance the hackathon experience.
But what if you don’t have a team beforehand? Don’t worry! On the first day of the event, a team will be assigned to all those participants who are not part of a group yet. In any case, the bottom line is: Have fun and share the knowledge!

    Award categories
    – Best Overall Project
    – Most Creative Project
    – Impact: The potential value and impact the solution would have in the BIM world

    Judging Criteria
    Technology:
How technically impressive was the hack? Was the technical problem the team tackled difficult? Did you find a new use for, or leverage, an existing piece of technology? Did the technology involved make you go “Wow”?
Innovation: How innovative and groundbreaking was the idea? Did it use a particularly clever technique or did it use many different components?
    Open-source:
Does your project live on GitHub/Bitbucket? Is it open? Did you leverage other great techniques that already exist? We encourage you to develop an app that can easily be used by others.
    Learning:
Did the team stretch themselves? Did they try to learn something new? Which technologies did you use, that you didn’t know before?
    Teamwork & Collaboration:
We encourage teams formed by professionals from multiple companies and disciplines.

And as judges… Some of the smartest people in the industry!

Roshan Mehdizadeh Corsiglia: Global Governance Executive, Real Estate at Google

Sanne K. Worthing: Manager BIM & VDC at Walt Disney Imagineering

Matt Jezyk: Senior Staff Software Engineer at Tesla

Greg Demchak: Technical Architect at Bentley Systems

Meena Abdelkodoos: BIM Project Manager at Turner Construction Company

    Will there be prizes?
It’s not about winning—it’s about learning and making friends (so everyone’s a winner!). If you’re thinking, “that’s adorable…but really,” then we’ve got you covered too. A panel of professional judges will select the top three hacks, one for each of the following categories:

    • Best Overall Project
    • Most Creative Project
    • Impact: The potential value and impact the solution would have in the BIM world

We have 1500 USD worth of prizes. Maybe you’ve had your heart set on something for a while now, like a cool drone, an Amazon Echo Dot, an Oculus Go, a Fitbit, a Nespresso machine, a set of amazing headphones… The world is your oyster! We’d love to help your dreams come true and that’s why we’re giving the winners digital gift cards in Amazon*!
